. >> reporter: ordering a pentagon investigation of one of the nation's highest profile u.s. military officials. general john allen, the man who succeeded david petreaus as head of the international forces in afghanistan is linked to the investigation involving his predecessor. secretary of defense leon panetta says the fbi has turned the case over to department of defense investigators. the senior u.s. defense official says the inquiry centers around potentially inappropriate e-mails with jill kelley, the florida woman who sparked an investigation that led to petreaus' resignation as head of the cia. >> if you know my sister like i said, she is a dedicated mother and wife. >> reporter: kelley went to the fbi when she received threatening e-mails from an anonymous source. those were allegedly linked to paula broadwell. broadwell was having an affair with petreaus and reportedly believed kelley was a romantic rival for his attention. monday night investigators searched broadwell's home. agents didn't say what they were looking for but carried out boxes and a computer. general allen is in washing
, the commander of u.s. and nato forces in afghanistan is now under investigation for alleged inappropriate communications with jill kelley. now investigators are said to be looking into the 20,000 to 30,000 pages of e-mails and other documents that he sent to her. kelley, of course, is the florida woman whose original complaint to the fbi about threatening e-mails inadvertently exposed the affair between general petraeus and paula broadwell. meantime a team of fbi agents searched broadwell's home in charlotte, north carolina, overnight, and spent nearly five hours there wrapping up just after 1:00 in the morning. "wall street journal" is reporting that the fbi agent who launched the petraeus investigation himself is under investigation. in part because he sent shirtless pictures of himself to jill kelley. jill kelley, the woman who kicked off all of this investigation, by complaining about the e-mails that she was getting from the petraeus mistress. so the agent, who knew kelley, allegedly sent those pictures before any investigation began, but as you can see, the story is getting much mor

this unraveled. and it all has to do with tampa where, of course, u.s. central command is located and jill kelley, whom you just saw there, she was involved as a volunteer. she's no diplomatic protection whatsoever, but she was involved as a volunteer dealing with international visitors in the military apparently. so she in this capacity gets to know general petraeus and also general allen. so he gets an e-mail, she gets e-mails. he warns her that he's getting these e-mails, this is jill kelley. and jill kelley goes to the fbi and that is how this all unravels. now, speaking of general allen, he, of course, is the top u.s. and nato commander in afghanistan. he was nominated as the supreme allied commander in europe. and that nomination is on hold. but secretary panetta said that they have confidence in him. let's listen to panetta. >> no one should leap to any conclusions. no one should leap to any conclusions here. general allen is doing an excellent job at isap and leading those forces. he has my continued conference to lead those forces and continue to fight. but his nomination has been put on
